Jazz pianist Bart Flos goes solo again
After a series of solo CDs under the wings of NextSteps Projects, jazz pianist Bart Flos released his first triple CD album ‘Roots & Reflections’ in 2019 under Stage 6, performed both solo and with a jazz trio. This time however, Flos is going ‘solo only’, again releasing three CDs under Stage 7. This new album is called ‘Clarity of Vision’, in three parts: Sense of Purpose, Sense of Direction and Sense of Urgency.
“It’s been a long cherished dream of mine to dive into the studio with a concert grand piano of my choice,” says Flos, “and all that time I assumed that I would ultimately choose one of the three great piano builders: Steinway, Bösendorfer or Bechstein”. However, during the extensive search for the best grand piano for this project, he came across an unexpected piano brand: Fazioli. And not the least, but the Fazioli F308, at over three meters the largest concert grand piano in the world.
Not necessarily the largest
“It’s important to understand,” Flos continues, “that it was never my intention to play on the largest concert grand piano per se. It could just as well have been a smaller one from a much lesser-known builder. I’m not so much concerned with brand and size, but far more with sound, timbre, feel and softness. A lot of big brands have fallen by the wayside during my search, but in the end I fell in love with this Fazioli. The fact that this F308 is also the absolute favorite of jazz pianist Herbie Hancock made it extra special for me”.
Audio and video
The music project ‘Clarity of Vision’ includes a total of 45 compositions and arrangements of both well-known jazz standards and Flos’ original work. The first 24 compositions are recorded in the Volver Studio in Tilburg and appear on CD album and streaming platforms. During one of the studio days, video recordings were made of 6 of the 24 compositions and a short documentary was compiled, all of which can be viewed on YouTube.
The remaining 21 compositions were recorded as video clips in the home studio in Helmond under the name ‘The Leftovers’, and can be viewed on YouTube under ‘NextSteps Projects 2026’. Jazzpianist Bart Flos gaat opnieuw solo
Na een reeks van solo-CD’s onder de vleugels van NextSteps Projects, verscheen in 2019 het eerste driedubbel-CD-album van jazzpianist Bart Flos. ‘Roots & Reflections’ (Stage 6) is zowel solo als met een jazztrio uitgevoerd. Deze keer gaat Flos echter ‘alleen solo’, met opnieuw drie CD’s. Het album heet ‘Clarity of Vision’ (Stage 7), uitgevoerd in drie delen: Sense of Purpose, Sense of Direction en Sense of Urgency.
“Het is een langgekoesterde droom van mij om de studio in te duiken met een concertvleugel van mijn keuze”, vertelt Flos, “en al die tijd was ik in de veronderstelling dat ik één van de drie grote pianobouwers zou kiezen: Steinway, Bösendorfer of Bechstein”. Tijdens zijn uitgebreide zoektocht naar de beste vleugel voor dit project kwam hij echter uit op een onverwacht pianomerk: Fazioli. En niet de minste, maar de Fazioli F308, met ruim drie meter de grootste concertvleugel ter wereld.
Niet per se de grootste
“Het is belangrijk om te begrijpen,” vervolgt Flos, “dat het nooit mijn bedoeling is geweest om per sé op de grootste concertvleugel te spelen. Het had net zo goed een kleinere vleugel van een veel minder bekende bouwer kunnen zijn. Het gaat me namelijk niet zozeer om merk en grootte, maar om geluid, timbre, gevoel en zachtheid. Er zijn tijdens mijn zoektocht heel wat grote merken gesneuveld, maar uiteindelijk werd ik verliefd op deze Fazioli. Dat de F308 ook nog eens de absolute favoriet is van jazzpianist Herbie Hancock heeft het extra speciaal voor mij gemaakt”.

Het muziekproject ‘Clarity of Vision’ omvat in totaal 45 composities en arrangementen van zowel bekende jazz standards als eigen werk van Flos. Daarvan zijn er 24 in de Volver Studio in Tilburg opgenomen en te beluisteren op CD-album en streamingplatforms. Op één van de studiodagen zijn video-opnames gemaakt van 6 van de 24 composities en er is een korte documentaire samengesteld, allen te bekijken op YouTube.
De resterende 21 composities zijn in de thuisstudio in Helmond als videoclips opgenomen onder de naam ‘The Leftovers’ en te bekijken op YouTube onder ‘NextSteps Projects 2026’.
