Stage 3 (2006)

The NextSteps Series Solo Projects Stage 3 (2006)

Three goals, three parts, five musical area’s

The NextSteps Series Project Stage 3 that I started in July 2004 is aimed to reach three goals:

(1) to extend my work in various musical area’s
(2) to use the latest MIDI-technology
(3) to utilise my NextSteps Project Studio to produce output (MD’s, CD’s) in a relative short period of time.

The Stage 3 Project has been devided into three parts:

(1) Project Set-Up
(2) Project Execution
(3) Project Output.

The project’s output covers five musical area’s:

(1) Solo Jazz, Blues & Soul
(2) Beats & Grooves
(3) Jazz & Latin
(4) Fusion & Funk
(5) Blues & Soul.

To keep the overview a process of “joining” and “sampling” has been introduced to capture “the best of”-tracks on separate CD’s to allow the listener either to dive deep into specificcompositions or to enjoy various overviews of compositions and styles.

Please note: the graphic design of the CD-covers of the NextSteps Projects Stage 3 is done by Jantine Lanting.

But first, let us look at the project approach for Stage 3 of the NextSteps Series projects.

Part 1: Project Set-Up

July 2004: Upgrade of NextSteps Studio

As a marker for the project’s beginning, the NextSteps Studio was upgraded with new MIDI-equipment and Roland & Spectrasonics SRX Expansion Boards in the Summer of 2004. All equipment was integrated in two flight cases for easy transport and upgraded with a Roland XV-5080 Synthesizer Module, Eurorack Pro Line Mixer and Ultragraph Pro Graphic Equalizer.

The Roland module has been extended with the latest expansion boards such as Platinum Trax and Big Brass Ensemble. And with the addition of a Boss DR-3 Rhythm Module the studio set was more than complete: it allowed almost limitless combinations of sounds and styles.

Later on a TASCAM CD-RW750 Professional CD Rewritable Recorder was added to the equipment to allow easy but professional, digital to digital recording of CD masters.

September 2004: New Grand Piano Sound added to the Roland SRX Expansion Board Series: SRX-11

Than Roland added the SRX-11 Complete Piano to the Expansion Program and the NextSteps Studio proudly added this sound to its collection. It is the “most stunning multi-sampled grand piano to date” with a “lush, fully split 88-note acoustic grand that truly raises the bar in digital piano technology”. This grand piano is now the basis for all NextSteps Studio activities to come.

October 2004 – May 2005: Preparation for new series of NextSteps CD’s: Stage 3

Based on the upgrade of the NextSteps Studio a process of patch analysis and pre-selection was initiated. The airm was to prepare all studio equipment for recording sessions scheduled within a year.

By May 2005 the NextSteps Studio patch analysis and pre-selection was complete. All sounds, both instrumental and drums were selected and logged. The NextSteps Studio was now sufficiently prepared for its next step: studio programming and drums / patches prioritisation. The aim was to enable a fast and practicle way to select combinations of sounds and drums for live studio performance.

Please note: the graphic design of the CD-covers of the NextSteps Projects Stage 3 is done by Jantine Lanting.

September 2005 – November 2005: NextSteps Studio Programming half way

By the fall of 2005 good progress was made in preparing the NextSteps Studio for the recording sessions to come. All drum and patch analysis were entered into a central database to allow easy access to the various combinations of sounds and compositions. The recording sessions were estimated to be scheduled by te end of that year.

Indeed, by November 2005 the NextSteps Studio was ready for the actual recording sessions. All programming and database preparations were now complete. The NextSteps Studio was ready for the recording sessions scheduled to start during the Christmas / New Years Break of 2005. I would now fuse my new compositions with the various music and drum patches available.

Part 2: Project Execution

The actual recording sessions took place during a period of about seven weeks. It simply meant working down a list of pre-selected configurations of drums and sounds and recording every single effort to squeeze a composition into and out of it. Some compositions already existed, both on paper and in my head, some spontaneously emerged at that point in time.

The real neat part of it all was that modern technology provided me with the best sounds and drums and that the creative, musical spirit was simply enhanced by it, fortified and pushed forward, so to speak. The only thing I had to do was be rested, full of spirit and creative, fire up my studio, press a few buttons and work the keys! And that’s exactly equal to the “live on stage approach”.

February 2006: all recording sessions for the NextSteps Series Solo Projects Stage 3 – 2006 finished

By the end of Winter 2006 all in all some 25 MiniDiscs of “full live studio sessions” had been recorded producing over 300 compositions in 5 musical styles: (1) Solo Piano, Jazz, Blues and Soul, (2) Beats & Grooves, (3) Jazz & Latin, (4) Fusion & Funk and (5) Blues & Soul. The recording sessions actually took place between December the 22nd of 2005 and February the 6th of 2006, about seven weeks, immediately followed by the arduous task of analysing, selecting and premastering the output.

Please note: the graphic design of the CD-covers of the NextSteps Projects Stage 3 is done by Jantine Lanting.

Only the carefully selected “best of” recordings would make it to the CD’s, but all tracks needed to be reviewed, carefully listened to, named and logged in the central NextSteps Project Database. When relatively large amounts of compositions are produced it takes a good administration to keep the overview!

Part 3: Project Output

March 2006: NextSteps Stage 3 master production finished

By the beginning of Spring 2006 all pre-mastered MD selections were recorded directly on CD by means of a TASCAM CD-RW750 Professional CD Rewritable Recorder without the use of real / virtual studio recording devices. So, “What you hear is how it’s been played“. The result was now visible and audible through 17 new CD’s with 252 new and original compositions in 7 different styles producing 1145 minutes or over 19 hours of music! The post-production phase could now begin.

June 2006: NextSteps Stage 3 post-production phase finished

By the Summer of 2006 the post-production phase of Stage 3 of the NextSteps Series Solo project was finished. All CD’s were finalised, designed and prepared for limited production and distribution.

Below you will find an overview of all newly produced CD’s by musical area, CD designation and number of tracks / number of minutes of recorded music.

Joined CD’s and Samplers

Due to the relatively large number of CD’s a “best of” recording process was engaged to alow easier access to the idea’s behind the music. The 17 new CD’s have been roughly paired in two’s producing 9 “joined” CD’s (no’s 23 through 31) which are subsequently brought back to 3 NextSteps Stage 3 Samplers: No 32 (Jazz Sampler), No 33 (Beats & Grooves) and No 34 (Solo Sampler).

These last three have been merged into one producing No 35, NextSteps Series Solo Project 2006 Stage 3 – Sampler. This was also done for Stage 2, producing CD No 36, NextSteps Series Solo Project 2003. Stage 1 of the NextSteps Projects was basically my first Solo CD, “NextSteps Crossing Over – Bart Flos / Solo” produced in 2000.

Finally a “mother CD” was produced joining the best of all samplers into one CD No 37:NextSteps Series Solo project – CD Overview 2000 – 2006. Please use this link to find the “one page summary”, the “organigram” that shows all available CD’s in relation to each other.

All compositions below are real time pre-mixed ‘live’ studio recordings. No overdubs, no post-mixing, no digital editing of any kind. All tracks are recorded simultaneously: WYHIHIBEP (“What you hear is how it’s been played“).

All sounds are produced through one central MIDI key board, the magnificent Roland RD700, augmented with various expansion boards and an additional external rythm processor, the BOSS DR-3. Although some instruments may appear acoustic, alle sounds are digital in nature.

You can find five examples below and some of them are still interesting to pick up again (Straight Bananas and Camillo for example) so who knows, there’s always something to look out for…
